February 1 , 2007

The NCAA has asked the NGJA to provide evaluations of new elements and sequences. The values of these elements are posted in this document.

Depending on how often elements are submitted, this document could get updated very frequently. Please consult this often. Skills that have changed in this document due to an FIG interpretation, *** (All items marked this way from last year have been cleared so that new changes become more easily seen.)

Newly listed NCAA evaluations will be in italics for the first season listed.

Where possible, we will try to post digital versions of those skills evaluated on these pages.

Any element that was devalued by the FIG later than 15 November, 2006 will maintain the value that it had in the March 2006 Code. These elements are documented in this NGJA/NCAA update to the rules.

If you have additional questions on the rules, please click here to e-mail those to me.

How to Submit New Elements for Evaluation?

If you are an NCAA coach and wish to submit a new element or sequence for evaluation, please digitize the skill, keep it under 2mb, and use the upload lonk on the left side of our home page. then send me email to let us know the skill is waiting.

Clarifications on the Code

December 2006 Code
Article 18.3 Short routines - will not apply to the NCAA Program this season - If a gymnast is short of the required 10 skills a judge awards only the difficulty seen and takes no other deduction from start value.

Article 40.6 - Vault - Rule for hand placement for Handspring and Yamashita Vaults will not apply to the NCAA Program this season.

Special Addenda to Clarify PH and HB Changes from the FIG-MTC Newsletter 21

1.) PH: Clarification regarding the rule which allows only 2 Russian skills in a PH routine.

Athletes are limited to 2 Russians wendeswings per routine. If an athlete does a 3rd Russian wendeswing in his routine, eliminate the "lowest" valued Russian skill (do not eliminate the 3rd Russian in chronological order).
For example:
Russian 1080  = (D value)
Russian 360 on 1 pommel = (C value)
Russian 1080 dismount  =  (D value)

In this case, the Russian 360 on 1 pommel should be eliminated since it has the "lowest" value of the Russian Wendeswings. Furthermore, always select the dismount since you are required to pick the highest valued skill from each element group.

NOTE:
a.) Since athletes are limited to only 2 Russian skills on PH, the Wu, Tong Fei, Roth, Kroll, or flops connected to a Russian skill on 1 pommel do not count toward the 2 Russian skill limit (these are exceptions).
b.) If a gymnast attempts a Wu and falls after completing 1/2 of the skill (1/2 travel with a 360 degree turn), he would receive B credit for the skill (same box as a Russian 360 on the leather) and this would count as 1 of the Russian Wendeswing skills allowed. But, according to the NCAA Rules, this skill could be eliminated if there are 2 other Russian skills of greater value.

2.) HB: Clarification on el-grip giant swings and when to give credit for an invert.

Example #1:
  • B value jam, swing through the bottom, swing up to handstand = B value for the entire sequence
  • hop to undergrip = B value for the grip change (note: all he did was a simple grip change...nothing else)
Combination value = B+B

Example #2:
  •  B value jam, swing through the bottom, swing up to handstand in an inverted (Russian giant) position = B value for the entire sequence
  • Swing down in el-grip, swing up to handstand = B value for the el-grip giant
  • hop to undergrip = B value for the grip change (again, this was just a simple grip change)
Combination value = B+B+B      Note: It appears that the gymnast did an invert giant, however, this is considered part of the previous element.

Example #3:
  • B value jam, swing through the bottom, swing up to handstand in an inverted (Russian giant) postion = B value for the entire sequence
  • Swing down, swing up to handstand in an inverted (Russian giant) position = C value for the invert
  • Swing down, swing up to handstand = B value for the el-grip giant
  • hop to undergrip = B value for the grip change
Combination value = B+C+B+B

Example #4:
  • C value jam within 15 degrees of the handstand, swing through the bottom, swing up to handstand in an inverted (Russian giant) position = C value for the jam
  • Swing through the bottom, swing up to handstand = B value for an el-grip giant
  • hop to undergrip = B value for the grip change
Combination value = C+B+B

NOTE: In example 2 & 4, it appears that the gymnast did an invert giant after the jam , but this is part of the previous skill.

General

*** Correction regarding posting Start Values: All judges are required to post their start value. At the discretion of the head judge, a conference may be called to address the difference in start values, however, this is to be done after each judge shows both the start value and the final score. Furthermore, after the head judge approves the start value and final score, the following should occur: The head judge’s start value will stay posted while the other judge’s start value will be closed, however, final scores from all judges will remain posted. (November 14th 2006)

  1. **** FX .1 (2006-10-01) (2006-01-20) Side salto with full turn - see NGJA/USAG Interpretations - Interpretation rolled in for this season.

2                  ****FX: If the 5th element in an element group is involved in a connection, but is not counted in the top 10 parts, it will receive connection bonus. On the other hand, if the 5th skill is recognized within the top 10 parts and is eliminated because it is the 5th element from the same element group, no connection bonus is awarded. (11/14/2006)

3.   **** If a gymnast falls during a Wu, but completes at least the first ½ of the Wu with a 360 turn, the gymnast will be awarded B credit for the partial completion. (11/14/2006)

4.  ****If a gymnast falls while doing a Russian 1080 on the end of the horse but he completes at least a 720 turn, the gymnast will be awarded C credit. The same rule applies if the gymnast completes a 360 turn and then falls (B credit is received). (11/14/2006)

5. PH: **** Russian 1080 between the pommels is listed as an E skill while a Russian 1080 on the end is listed as a D skill. However, Russian 720 between the pommels or on the end will receive a C value (same box). This rule applies also to a Russian 360 (B value, same box whether it is done between the pommels or on the end). (11/14/2006)

6. PH: ****FIG: EG 1, #8: Scissor forwards with hop sideways (also with ½ turn). The scissor half that goes from the middle to the end (or end to middle) may be done with or without a hop and still receive B credit. (11/14/2006)

7. PH: ****For all handstand dismounts, if the gymnast legs reverse direction while attempting to do the handstand by going ‘up-down-up’ or if the feet push off the horse, the dismount will not be recognized. No credit will be awarded for the skill or the dismount element group. (11/14/2006)

8, PH: ****For Russian dismounts: These dismounts will be required to be 45 degrees above horizontal for no deduction. The horizontal line will be determined by the athlete’s shoulder height. Thus, deductions will be enforced below 45 degrees above horizontal. (11/14/2006)

9. PH: ****Athletes will be limited to 2 Russians wendeswings per routine, on the pommels or leather, and this will include the dismount. This will not include Russians that are performed in direct connection with other skills – as in PH article 32, #2, g. which describes flops and direct Stockli to Russians. Furthermore, this does not include the Wu or Tong Fei. (11/10/2006). For example: (11/14/2006)

a.         Not acceptable: Russian 1080 on the end…Russian 360 on 1 pommel…Russian 1080 dismount. In this case, the 3rd Russian skill (the dismount) is not recognized.

b.         Acceptable: Russian 1080 on the end…Wu…Russian 1080 dismount.

See the section: "Special Addenda to Clarify PH and HB Changes from the FIG-MTC Newsletter 21" above. 02-01-2007

10. (2006-01-12)Adrian Stoica made a strong point that skills need to be completed in their entirety to receive full credit. For example:  A Magyar (LPLPL) would receive D credit if it is completed in front support on the end. However, if a gymnast does a 1/4 turn out before finishing the Magyar, thus ending in side support, he would receive a "B" value for a 2/3 travel. Also, a Tong Fei needs to finish in side support to receive D value or it will be devalued.

  1.  and PB.1 Straddling during a press to handstand) (2006-01-12)While the presentation in Houston discussed allowing the gymnast to straddle during a press on the rings or parallel bars, it appears the FIG has not yet come to a solid decision. Therefore, for this season, the B-jury deduction for atypical straddling during a press to handstand will contiune to be applied as it was during the last quadrennium: Once your legs are together, they must stay together; if you then straddle during the press, you will incur a medium deduction.
  2. PB.1: Element Group IV ( 2006-01-26)- Peach to support (not through handstand) = non recognized skill of no value.
  3. PB.2: Element Group I #65 (2006.01.31)- From handstand on one rail following a swinging hop element (min B): Healy to support. In order to get the E value, the preceding skill must clearly be at least a minimum of B value and be a swinging hop element. If there is no swinging hop, then the Healy would be rated as a D value Healy, in the same box (#64) as any other D value Healy. An example of a preceding skill that would meet the definition would be a Stutz to one rail. An example of a skill that typically does not meet the requirement is a glide straddle to handstand because it is not a swinging hop. Therefore, with that as the preceding skill, the Healy will be evaluated as a D in box #64.
  4. HB.1: Element Group 1, #3:(2006-01-12) The back uprise in overgrip with 1/1 turn to handstand needs to complete the turn on the way up to the handstand. If the gymnast does a back uprise to handstand, 1/1 turn by walking around in a handstand (pirouette-pirouette), he will receive an A for the back uprise and an A for the pirouette. The 2nd pirouette is not recognized since it is a repeated skill.
  5. **** HB.2: (2006 -10-01)Weiler kip 1/1 turn to mixed grip = see FIG MTC Newsletter 20 - now official FIG evaluation.
  6. **** HB.3: (2006-10-01) Weiler kip 1/1 turn to double elgrip = see FIG MTC Newsletter 20 - now official FIG evaluation.
  7. HB.4: (2006-01-12)Stalder hop 1/1 turn without going over the bar to mixed grip will receive C credit. This is similar to element group 3, #58 but to mixed grip instead of elgrip.
  8. **** HB.5 (2006-10-01) (2006-01-20) Any skill on HB with grip changes will cause the element to be separated. A few examples: of skills that will be broken up:
    1. Stalder 1/1 turn to overgrip (no hop but with multiple grip changes) = B+A. This is a stalder 1/2 turn (B) + pirouette (A).
    2. From over grip or mixed grip, endo with grip change 1/2 turn = B+A.
    3.  From over grip, endo with grip change 1/1 turn to double elgrip = B+C

19. **** Endo 1/1 turn to mixed grip, swing through the bottom, simple grip change. An “A” value is awarded for the simple grip change, and it’s considered different than a forward giant. (A value, EG #1).  (11/14/2006)

20.  **** For elements which include turns to double elgrip or mixed el-grip (i.e. Endo 1/1 turn to mixed grip or elgrip, Rybalko skills, etc.) deviations from the prescribed turning end body position (after the re-grasping moment) will be applied according to the following specific chart.     (0-30º no deduction; 31º – 45º small error; 46º – 90º medium error; beyond 90º large error). (11/14/2006)

21. **** Endo 1/1 turn to elgrip, swing through the bottom in elgrip and then to handstand, endo-elgrip. This combination is evaluated as D+C. There is no B elgrip giant. The swing to handstand in elgrip is considered as a part of the 1/1 turn to elgrip. (11/14/2006)

22. **** For NCAA competitions, gymnasts will not be limited on high bar regarding turning elements where the gymnast re-grasps in different grip variations. Therefore, the following are a few examples that are acceptable: Rybalko to elgrip and Rybalko to mixed el-grip,…Endo 1/1 turn to elgrip and Endo 1/1 turn to mixed el-grip,…Full turn to elgrip and full turn to mixed el-grip,…etc. All variations will be accepted. (11/14/2006)

Elements With Retained Value
Skill values that were downgraded by the FIG but will retain the value for this year since they are a listed skill in the 2006 March Code.

General

1. ***** it is NOT acceptable to judge using 0.05 of a point for this season.

In the FIG Code of Points (October 2005 - Article 19, 2B) it states the following: "All deductions are submitted by the judges of the B-Jury in tenths of points (i.e. 0.7; 1.0, etc.) or five-hundreds of a point (i.e. 0.35; 0.75; etc.) if the 0.05 adjustment applies" This is no longer in the May Code.

New Skill Evaluations

SR.1 (2006-02-23) From a Cross - lower forward with straight body through back lever and inlocate to piked inverted hang = A and same box as #I.49, slow inlocate.

PB1 (2006-01-26) From upper arms: swing forward to reverse cast and kip with straddle cut backward to handstand: C in Element Group II.

Other Important Information (all as of October 1, 2006)

2.****  Only the head judge will flash the start value. Revised 11/14/2006: Correction regarding posting Start Values: All judges are required to post their start value.

3. A fall will be deducted 0.5 on every event except Vault, where the deduction for a fall shall be 0.8

4. The dismount will no longer fulfill a group requirement and a dismount requirement,

5. On all events, the "dismount element group" for NCAA competitions shall be evaluated and rewarded as follows:
